Barnaby Smith

Barnaby Smith is a General Surgeon with an interest in Surgical Oncology, Upper Gastrointestinal surgery, and hernias - both laparoscopic and open techniques. Barnaby is employed as a surgeon and endoscopist by the Bay of Plenty DHB at both Tauranga and Whakatane Hospitals and regularly works within the Eastern Bay of Plenty. 

Barnaby is a full member of the NZ Conjoint Committee (Upper and Lower GI endoscopy) and Breast Surgeons of Australia and New Zealand (BreastsurgANZ). 

Background - After gaining his fellowship from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, Barnaby spent two years in the United Kingdom at Tertiary centres of excellence refining his skills in Melanoma, Surgical Oncology, and Upper Gastrointestinal surgery.

After completing his Australasian Surgical Fellowship (FRANCS), Barnaby spent over two years of higher training at international posts to further his clinical skills in a Clinical Fellowship at the Royal Marsden, London, in Melanoma and Surgical Oncology under their internationally recognised team.

This was followed by a Clinical Fellowship at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh (UK) in Upper Gastrointestinal surgery (Cancer and Benign Surgery). 

Prior to returning to the Bay of Plenty with his family, Barnaby spent time as an Observatory Fellow in surgical oncology at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC, New York, USA) who are generally regarded as one of the top institutions in the world.  


Dr Smith has been performing Sleeve Gastrectomy and Roux-en-Y Gastric bypass weight-loss surgery in the Bay of Plenty for over 8 years. This includes a comprehensive “wrap-around” service for weight-loss patients, with Dietician, Psychologist and Nurse specialist input.
